What Is the Blue Cross Blue Shield BlueCard Program?

The BlueCard program is a national system that connects all independent Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans across the United States. If you have a BCBS PPO plan from any state, the BlueCard program allows you to receive care from a participating provider in another state through telehealth. You use your regular BCBS benefits, and your claim is processed through the BlueCard network.

This means you do not need to change your insurance or find a new plan to see a dietitian outside your home state. Your BCBS coverage travels with you.

How It Works for Telehealth Nutrition Counseling

You find a dietitian who is enrolled with their local BCBS plan. In this case, the dietitian is enrolled with Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oregon. Because Regence is part of the BlueCard system, your out-of-state BCBS plan connects seamlessly through the network.

You schedule a virtual appointment. You attend the session from your home via a secure video link. The dietitian submits the claim to Regence, and the BlueCard system routes it to your home BCBS plan. Your benefits apply the same way they would if you saw an in-network provider in your own state.

No extra paperwork, no out-of-network hassles, no surprise billing.

Insurance and Cost

If you have a BCBS PPO plan, your visit is covered in-network through the BlueCard program. Many plans include nutrition counseling with a $0 copay for preventive care or chronic disease management. The dietitian can verify your specific benefits before your first appointment at no charge.

This service is available only to BCBS members. Plans from other insurance carriers are not accepted for interstate telehealth.

A Note on the BlueCard Program

The BlueCard program is available for BCBS PPO plans. It is not available for Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, or HMO plans through BCBS. Can I use my BCBS insurance from another state? Yes, if you have a BCBS PPO plan. The BlueCard program allows you to use your out-of-state BCBS benefits for telehealth with a provider enrolled in their local BCBS plan.
